Amazing Back Surgery Success Story – Herniated Discs
Louie has an extremely dangerous job dealing with all aspects of port/dock operations. In June of 2001, he turned his head and neck very quickly and experienced sudden and extreme pain in his neck and in both arms. He was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with extreme herniation of his cervical discs. The disc was protruding into the spinal cord 9mm; to put this in perspective, the diameter of your cervical spinal cord is approximately 10mm. The hospital put him in traction for 9 days with a morphine pump for the excruciating pain. Louie said he even considered taking his own life at times as the pain was so unbearable.
Many doctors told him that he would likely end up quadriplegic or a paraplegic. Louie did not like these prognoses and continued searching for a doctor he could believe in. He endured months of conservative care with injections and medications without relief before he found Dr. Hamada. He said the surgery would be done through an anterior (front) approach, rather than disrupting many muscles and ligaments by accessing the discs from the poster (back). Louie underwent an anterior cervical discectomy at C6-7 with instrumented fusion and bone graft and after surgery, he awoke from the anesthesia with his family friends all around and he realized that his pain was gone and he could move his legs and arms and at that point, Louie said, I cried tears of joy – he was so thankful he knew he would be fine. He walked to his car after 3 days in the hospital and eventually went back to work and his life.

PRODISC® Lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) Surgery – The Spine Institute Santa Monica CA

What is it? The FDA Approved PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is an artificial intervertebral disc made from metal and plastic that is used to treat pain associated with degenerative disc disease (DDD). DDD is defined as discogenic back pain (pain resulting from a degenerated intervertebral disc) with degeneration of the disc confirmed by patient history and radiographic studies. The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is implanted to replace a diseased or damaged intervertebral disc during a surgical procedure called spinal arthroplasty.
How does it work? The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement consists of three parts:
1. Two metal (cobalt-chrome alloy) endplates that are anchored to the top and bottom surfaces of the spinal bones (vertebrae)
2. A plastic (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, or UHMWPE) inlay that fits between the two endplates
The plastic inlay and endplates help restore the natural distance between the two vertebrae (disc height). The top (superior) endplate can slide over the domed part of the inlay, which can allow movement at the level where it is implanted.
When is it used? The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is indicated for spinal arthroplasty in patients who:
1. are skeletally mature
2. have degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one level in the lumbar spine (from L3-S1)
3. have no more than Grade 1 spondylolisthesis at the involved level
4. have had no relief from pain after at least six months of non-surgical treatment
What will it accomplish? The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is used to replace a damaged intervertebral disc. The device may restore disc height, may reduce pain, and may allow movement at the level where it is implanted.
